If you went down to the Green Bay High School last October, you'd have been in for a big surprise as Waitakere Auckland Brass Band, under musical director Steven Booth, held their annual 'Toys for Kids' concert. Guests were greeted by actors are actresses dressed in character as they approached the venue which was magical for the children who eagerly queued to have their photos taken with Snow White and Buzz Light Year.
Your admission ticket was the toy you donated on arrival, bound for The Waitakere Hospital Children's Unit, and dressing up was the order of the day for young and old.
The music appealed to all with pieces such as Toy Story, Disney Classics and Batman. Even the parents and grandparents were entertained.
Compere Leigh Fitzjames . kept the magic and mystic of young curiosity engaged throughout the whole programme with fun and games between numbers. Children laughed and cheered as she seamlessly linked each piece.
As the theme from Disney Classics filled the hall the stage filled with budding musicians when children from the audience were invited to pick up a percussion instruments, and play along.
After the concert the entertainment continued in the foyer as a huge Pizza feast was waiting for the children donated by the band's local Dominos Pizza. Children were also invited to meet players and their instruments and 'have a go' which has already seen the bands youth group recruit a few newbies to their ranks.
This year was the seventh Anniversary of this event and year on year attracts around 300 people. Seats have to be pre booked yet people still turn up at the door just hoping for that odd spare seat, showing just how popular this annual contribution to the people of Auckland has become.
