]]>Waitakere Auckland Brass Band showcased their versatility at the popular Jazz Mania Concert this weekend. More big band and swing rather than traditional brass for this annual event. Read on for more >>>>>
]]>An audience of close to 200 people were treated to a wide mix of jazz styles which really demonstrated the range and musicality around the stands as The Band performed in swing style. Musical Director Grant Langdon even arranged many of the items on the programme.
International vocalist Paul Ross joined The Band as Guest Artist, the crowd clearly loved his rich velvet tones as The Grand Hall at New Lynn RSA was filled with rapturous applause by the end of the evening.
The Band would like to thank New Lynn RSA for their generous support of this event, their supporters and corporate table sponsors many of whom purchased ticket packages which were donated to local retirement villages.
The Band would also like to thank Sir Bob Harvey, local councillors Penny Hulse and Linda Cooper and Ross Clow plus representatives from the Community Trusts whose support of the event is much appreciated.
The Band are mid preparations for The New Zealand National Brass Championships in July, so this concert was a chance for them to let their hair down before the serious contest work starts.
If you want to see The Band perform their contest repertoire, there will be a Pre-Contest Concert on Sunday 7th July at New Lynn RSA. Save the date and we will have more details to follow.

Waiheke Island is a haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves, beaches and brass bands. Well ...... one brass band .... us ..... when we take to the water in December!
We were just a little bit excited to be invited to work with the Waiheke Hospice for their upcoming Christmas fundraiser. Who wouldn't want to put their hand up for that gig?
Our Vice President, Chris Lines, who lives on the island, has been coordinating the logistics of getting the band over there for the 15th December event. A big thank you to Fullers who are getting the band and all our gear over there for free, in support of this event. Passengers on our ferry may be treated to some festive tunes as we arrive into the island.
The concert will be a Christmas extravaganza with carols and sing-along numbers. The band will perform with popular guests Sister Shout who have a big following on the island.
The concert is being held at the Morra Hall in Oneroa. Tickets are limited to 200 so get yours quickly if so you don't miss out.
Ticket sales will go towards supporting the day to day operations of the Waiheke Hospice Homecare. Hospice has always been close to our heart since the West Auckland Hospice cared for one of our dear band members Peter Weston a few years ago.
Rumour has it we will be having our band awards dinner at a vineyard so watch this space for more on that one ;-)

The audience brought their best singing voices for 'Land Of Hope And Glory' as the auditorium filled with the amazing brass sound.
Musical Director Grant Langdon chose a few numbers for our talented soloists to perform and both Andrew Large (cornet) and Steven Booth (baritone) wowed from centre stage to make sure this was a night to remember.
This was a fun-packed concert of foot-stamping, flag-waving, party-popping, sing-along Proms music.
The finale was a rousing time of audience participation, many dressed in red, white & blue, Land of Hope of Glory never felt and sounded so good.
Our concertgoers were in for a treat with our prize draw as The London Lolly Shop donated a brilliant 'Best of British' hamper as our first prize filled with goodies from their extensive range for British products.
Thanks to The Waitakere Playhouse Theatre Trust for their support of this event.

Calling all students! Are you moving to Auckland for University? Looking for a band to join? Look no further than Waitakere Auckland Brass.
We are a friendly, family orientated band who rehearse on Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00 PM in New Lynn, (a 5-minute walk from New Lynn Transport Station).
We have a busy schedule of events, so there will be lots of opportunities to perform on stage. Our annual concert series is well attended and as a band, we are often called upon to perform at community engagements.
With four National Champions around the stands, you will be in good company.
All brass and percussion players are welcome to come along, get in touch by sending us a message here
]]>We started using Eventbrite to streamline our concert tickets sales in late 2017 so the news of Eventbrite’s partnership with Instagram was music to our ears.
Our Marketing Coordinator, Tracey Ashton, has been working hard on raising the bands profile on social media and said “We now have a really engaged and enthusiastic community on Facebook and Instagram with Instagram proving to be one of the most powerful channels for us to grow awareness of our band both here in New Zealand and overseas.”
We still offer multiple ways for people to buy our concert tickets as we are mindful that not all of our supporters are online. Through the Eventbrite platform we can offer online ticket sales, manual payment by direct deposit or request an invoice but everything is managed through the one event dashboard, no more duplicate spreadsheets and lists of who has taken tickets and paid or not paid!
Our supporters have already been enjoying the ability to book tickets seamlessly from Facebook via the ‘get tickets’ button on the Facebook event page, which works really well and a great way to expand our reach.
Another bonus is the print at home ticket option but if supporters don’t have a printer at home they can simply show us the ticket on their phone on arrival at the concert. On the day of the concert, we can choose to scan guest tickets in on our front of house device or just pre-print a guest list for our front of house volunteers to manually check people in. These days getting people into the venue quickly is a breeze and makes for a professional front of house experience for our guests.
Whether we like it or not we are in the digital age and with print costs becoming prohibitive for many bands, social media channels are a critical element of our overall band marketing strategy.

If you purchase a 10c plastic bag at The Warehouse in New Lynn you are given a token to place in the Bags for Good donation boxes as you leave the checkout (we are the box on the far right!). Remember to ask for tokens and place them in the box. Don’t worry if you don’t like using plastic bags, you can opt to donate the 10c but decline the bag.
The campaign starts in August and funds raised are given to each of the store's community partners according to their percentage of total votes. Every six months the charities change and others are given the chance to get a donation.
The Warehouse focuses on helping children, youth and family charities, and try to reduce the amount of plastic bags going out into the community. The scheme has resulted in an 80% reduction in bags issued by The Warehouse with profits from the 10 cent charge being donated to local community groups and charities.
Next time you are planning a trip to The Warehouse choose the New Lynn store and pop a token in our donation box.
Happy voting!

That post led to our Waitakere Auckland Brass quintet performing at the official celebration for the re-opening of the Mount Albert town centre. The event held in May was to celebrate a significant revamp of the area making the town centre more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.
The event was well attended by local politicians including the Mayor of Auckland, Phil Goff, and the Albert-Eden Local Board members who were responsible for driving the project.
Also in attendance was one of the band's newly-elected patrons who has several other roles including MP for Mount Albert, Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, and, of course, Prime Minister, the lovely Jacinda Ardern.
As you would expect for someone so important, Jacinda didn't have much time to stand around and chat but we were able to squeeze in a quick photo opportunity and an invitation to our next concert!

Howard’s musical career began as a cornet player in the Salvation Army in the South West of England.
In 1993 he swapped the cornet for a baton and was appointed the Musical Director of Championship section Bodmin Town Band subsequently leading them to three successive South-West and Cornish Championships.
In 1997 Howard left the UK to become Musical Director of Waitakere Band in Auckland, New Zealand. That year they won two of the three sections at the National Contest and in 1999 were crowned New Zealand National Champion Band winning every stage event, also winning three consecutive New Zealand Entertainment “Band of the Year” titles.
The Brisbane Excelsior Band appointed Howard as Musical Director in 2002.
He has since led XLCR to remarkable contest successes unequalled in Australasia band history including eight State Championship wins, FABB (Federation of Australian Brass Bands) Australasian championship in 2013, eight Australian National A Grade Championships and three New Zealand Championship titles. Howard also led Brisbane Excelsior to two prestigious events in the United Kingdom, the British Open and the All England Masters.
He held the position of Musical Director of The National Band of New Zealand from 2007-2009 until leaving for the UK in 2010 to work as Resident Conductor with the world famous Fairey Band.
Howard returned to Brisbane Excelsior as Musical Director in 2013.
His ground-breaking work with brass bands includes regular trips to Tonga to work with school bands and conductors (starting the very first National Youth Band of Tonga in 2016) and mentoring and adjudicating opportunities throughout Australasia. He has recently completed a Master of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and runs his own company Taylormade Music Australia, national distributors for all PInstruments (Pbone, Ptrumpets) and John Packer Woodwind and Brass.
In addition to his XLCR role in Australia, Howard was appointed Professional MD to Waitakere Auckland Brass in 2016. That year we won the Hymn, were runner-up in the Set Test and achieved 3rd on Aggregate.
This is a very exciting time for us and we're looking forward to working with such an inspirational musician as Howard once again.
The Band would like to thank Resident Musical Director Grant Langdon for all his hard work preparing the band before handing over the baton to Howard.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Rob Wilson passed away earlier this month. Rob was a valuable member of Waitakere Auckland Brass for a number of years making the trip from Tauranga for contests and concerts whenever we needed him.
His funeral was held at Legacy Garden's Papamoa, Tauranga where there was a large band involvement at the funeral. Players from all over New Zealand were in attendance including a number of our current band members who travelled to Tauranga for the service.
Our thoughts are with Heather and his family at this sad time.
]]>We certainly needed a big venue for this years show as the audience filled the auditorium at The Bruce Ritchie Performing Arts Centre. Supporters travelled from far afield this year and it was lovely to welcome lots of groups from local retirement villages.
Audience members were treated to a blend of carols they could sing along to and other pieces they could just sit back and enjoy, soaking in the Christmas atmosphere while compere Jamie Mackay guided us through the brass programme.
Our soloists, as always were hitting the high notes and treated the audience to some stunning performances.
It was awesome to see our Youth Band perform on the big stage led by Musical Director, Linda Fileomahala who is clearly nurturing some talented young players for the future.
The finale came when both bands combined perfectly to perform Pokarekare Ana which was wonderfully harmonious and loved by the crowd who gave a rapturous applause at the end.
We loved working with the City of Sails Chorus and hope to work with them again. As you can see and hear from the short video clip below, the combined bands finale was a wonderful way to sign off our concert series for 2017.
Thanks to our wonderful photographer David Watson for this video clip and the accompanying photos below. A full photo commentary can be found on our facebook page and website photo gallery.
Until next year ...............

The Band are looking forward to returning to The Playhouse Theatre in Glen Eden to perform a concert all about music from the stage and screen in Broadway n' Brass.

The Playhouse Theatre Inc members will perform alongside the band eager to get back on stage after recently hosting their incredibly popular Sunset Boulevard Show.
When we announced this concert one of our supporters commented, “I can’t wait to hear these songs played by a fabulous full brass band - the way all Broadway show songs should sound!”
Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased from Band Members or online through our concert page here
The concert takes place at PlayhouseTheatre on Sunday 29th October 2017 at 3.00pm
Why not book a lunch at The Glen Eden RSA which is right next door. They are offering all concert attendees a special lunch deal (must be pre-booked). Give them a call to secure a table.

Old favourites of the pipes included The Steam Train to Mallaig, Scotland the Brave, The Black Bear and the evocative melody of the Bells of Dunblane.
The Celtic Brass pieces included the favourites Men of Harlech, Greensleeves and Auld Lang Syne. Excellent Euphonium and Horn solos were performed in Calon Lan, Wee Cooper of Fife and The Piper of Dundee.
No true Celtic Night is complete without the Piping In and the Address to the Haggis. The Guard of Honour contingent came from a duo of junior pipers and was expertly addressed by Piper Lex Calder – not bad for an Englishman!
The conclusion of the concert saw the combined bands playing out with the unofficial Scottish anthem The Flower of Scotland, the popular Amazing Grace and the lilting melody of Highland Cathedral.
An excellent night was had by all as evident from comments of brilliant, great occasion, marvellous, wonderful night, articulated by concert goers as they were leaving the venue.
A special thank you goes to the team at Massey High School for hosting the event.

2017 has been a very busy time year for us so far. From the National Contest and Anzac Day in April, Jazz Mania in May, ABA Solo & Party Competition, and now the Celtic Concert, we have had non-stop rehearsing since the beginning of the year. Still to come are the ABA Contest in September, Christmas in the Park and our own Christmas Concert in December. What a year!
National Contest was very early this year, in April instead of July, and this placed a lot of pressure on the band to prepare the contest music in preparation to travel to Wellington. We had a number of players who were not available due to the time of year, so had some new “Guests” this year. We played as well as we could on stage and had some very positive comments from the Adjudicator. Wellington is a great venue for Contest, we had excellent accommodation, and the band breakfasts and dinners were fantastic.
Our Soloists performed well, and we had successes with Steven Booth winning the Open Baritone, Joe Thomas Open Bass Trombone, Andrew Lile and Joe Thomas 3rd, and Steven Booth and Grant Langdon 5th in the Open Duet.
In other news, Jazz Mania was an outstanding musical success, especially with only 3 weeks to rehearse after Nationals. We played to a full house, and the band and soloists all deserve credit for excellent performances. We included a few new musical ideas into the programme this year, and band and audience really enjoyed the different genres of music.
~ Grant Langdon - Musical Director

ABA Solo’s saw our band once again get significant results, and we had a larger number of people competing than over the previous few years. Well done to all, regardless of your result. It is a big thing to stand up in front of your peers, and an adjudicator, and play a difficult piece of music. There were successes, and we congratulate Steven Booth, Anne Filimoehala, Jamie MacKay, Karl Beaufort, Courtney Hildreth, Jess Rodda, Linda Filimoehala, Norman McFarlane, and Ofa Tu'uefiafi for their 1st placings. Steven, Grant Langdon, for their 2nd and 3rd placings, and we must give Anne a special mention. Not only did she win the Open Slow Melody, she then won the Championship Slow Melody as well. Incredible playing!
]]>
From the opening number, Jazz Mania hit the high note. Musical Director Grant Langdon had the band primed and ready to deliver.
An audience of over 200 people were treated to a wide mix of jazz styles which really demonstrated the versatility and musicality we have around the stands at Waitakere Auckland Brass.
In a showcase like this, it was hard to pick a favourite piece as the band spoke from all corners of the jazz globe. We were very fortunate to have Bevan Williams as our MC and guest artist taking part in our programme again, a fact not lost on any of the band or audience as their warm applause demonstrated.
The Band would like to thank New Lynn RSA for their generous support of this event and our table sponsors who purchased ticket packages which were donated to local retirement villages. For a full list of supporters visit our website, plus see all the photos from the concert.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see The Band take to the stage for our annual 'Jazz Mania' concert. Last year's concert was pretty packed so you will need to be quick off the mark to get your tickets this year!
Jazz Mania is one of the most popular concerts on our calendar as it is more like a cabaret show than a traditional brass concert. Think round table seating, catered table options and a music program that will get you wanting to get up and dance.
Hosted in The Grand Hall at New Lynn RSA with round table format for guest seating and a licensed bar, this event is perfect if you are looking for a special night out for a group of friends or your team.
We are thrilled to have Bevan Williams as our MC again and guest vocalist.
Book tickets online on our website just head over to the concerts page and book online and print your tickets or give Tracey a call on (09) 817 7363 if you have any questions.

We have good reason to be proud of all our players after the recent National Brass Contest in Wellington, but two of our players pulled out all the stops to bring home some silverware for the band.
Steven Booth became the New Zealand National Baritone Champion with his performance of the set test, Nostalgic Arias (Peter Adams).
Joe Thomas brought home the New Zealand National Bass Trombone Title with his performance of Crack (Jack Bewley).
Both Steven and Joe took home the titles with an impressive three-point lead over the second place performers.
The band events were hotly contested with Wellington Brass and Brisbane Excelsior both gunning for the A Grade title. The 2017 title went to Brisbane Excelsior by the narrowest of margins (half a point).
